CHESSBOXING

Strategy. Stamina. Composure.

Our Chessboxing sessions are built around live rounds. You’ll alternate between timed chess matches and controlled sparring, shifting from calculation to combat and back again. There’s minimal instruction with the focus being on real-time decision-making, composure, and execution under fatigue.

It’s fast-paced, competitive, and mentally demanding. Whether you’re preparing to compete or just want to test yourself in a format that challenges both your brain and your conditioning, this is where you do it.

Open to complete beginner boxers as well as experienced fighters. Safety is our top priority.

What is chessboxing?

Chessboxing is a hybrid sport that alternates timed rounds of chess and boxing. One round you’re at the board making calculated moves. The next, you’re in the ring managing distance, timing, and pressure.

The match continues back and forth between mind and body until someone wins by checkmate, knockout, or decision. It’s a format that rewards strategy, conditioning, and composure equally - you have to think clearly while fatigued and stay calm while under threat.

At ITC, our sessions simulate that experience through controlled, lighter contact rounds, giving you the closest thing to real chessboxing competition in order to train for the real deal.

✺ Frequently asked questions ✺

  • No. Prior boxing experience isn’t required. The sparring is controlled, and newer athletes will be given a beginner run down prior to ever putting on a pair of gloves. If you’re willing to learn and stay composed, you’ll be fine.

  • Yes - at least a basic understanding. We’re not teaching how the pieces move or the rules of the game. You should be comfortable playing a full game of chess before joining. The focus here is competing under pressure, not learning fundamentals. That said, you do -not- need to have any high level chess skills. Some of our students learned how to play chess for the first time specifically for chessboxing.

  • Wear regular workout clothes and bring water. If you have boxing gloves and a mouthguard, bring them. If not, we’ll let you know what you need before you spar.

  • Yes. Sparring is controlled and supervised. The intensity is managed so everyone can train hard without unnecessary risk.

  • No. The training itself will build your conditioning. Come as you are — your stamina and focus will improve over time.

  • Our Chessboxing sessions are built around live rounds. You’ll alternate between timed chess and controlled sparring, so participation in both is part of the experience. If you’re looking to learn boxing fundamentals at a slower pace, we would invite you to check out our sister program over at Chessboxing NYC.

  • Yes. If you’re interested in competition, we can help you prepare. Sessions are designed to simulate the real format so you’re ready when the opportunity comes. There are currently no chessboxing bouts allowed in NYC right now but we’re hoping to change that soon. However, there are pathways directly to the world championships.

  • It combines physical sparring with live chess rounds. You’re not just managing fatigue — you’re making strategic decisions under pressure. It’s as much a mental test as it is a physical one.
